what is scar camouflage?

Scar camouflage is a specialized paramedical tattooing technique that uses custom-blended pigments to reduce the visibility of scars by matching them to your natural skin tone. This non-surgical treatment is designed to help scars blend seamlessly with the surrounding skin, making them less noticeable.

While scar camouflage does not remove scars, the process of micropigmentation and needling can help improve the texture of the skin by stimulating collagen production. This treatment is effective for a variety of scars, including surgical scars, injury scars, burns, acne scars, and more.

Scar camouflage is a long-lasting solution suitable for all skin tones, providing an impactful improvement in the appearance of scars and helping clients restore their skin.

what does the healing process look like?

The healing process for scar camouflage happens gradually over several weeks. Immediately after the procedure, the area will appear darker with some redness and slight swelling. Over the first few days, minor scabbing or flaking may occur. Within 1-2 weeks, the pigment begins to lighten, though some areas may look uneven as it settles. By 4-6 weeks, the color softens and blends more naturally, with final results visible around 6-8 weeks. Full healing can take up to three months, and while results are long-lasting, occasional touch-ups may be needed for maintenance.

how many sessions will i need?

The number of treatments needed for scar camouflage depends on several factors, including the size, depth, and condition of the scar, as well as how well your skin retains pigment. On average, most clients require two to three sessions, but some scars may need additional treatments for optimal blending. Since every scar is unique, it's difficult to predict the exact number of sessions required.

Following proper aftercare is essential for the best results, as healing and pigment retention vary from person to person. Your body's natural healing response plays a significant role in the outcome.

does it hurt?

During the procedure, the needles will penetrate the skin, so you may experience a scratching sensation and some discomfort.  Please avoid taking aspirin, as it can interfere with blood clotting and affect the treatment site.

We do not use numbing cream, as it can impact the skin texture and ink absorption, potentially affecting the final results. To ensure you're as comfortable as possible during the procedure, we advise avoiding alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours before and after your appointment and ensuring you've eaten beforehand. These steps will help you feel more relaxed throughout the treatment.

when will i see results?

Clients can notice a 20%-100% reduction of scars after one session. It can take up to 1-4 sessions.

Although scar camouflage can reduce the appearance of your scar, it’s important to understand that scars are long-lasting, and no scar will ever be completely invisible. Every scar is different: body location, size, shape, color, appearance of depth, and so on. Some scars require only a single treatment; others take multiple treatments. Results are cumulative and may take six to eight weeks to develop fully. If you’ve had your scar for a while, you may have noticed that it doesn’t tan the same way the rest of your skin does. That’s a natural characteristic of scar tissue and is not something we can change. However, the scar should be less visible as a result of our procedures.

how much does it cost?

Pricing varies on location, size, and severity of the area. A photo must be sent to info@permanentbeautyco.com or (517) 948-5037 upon booking so we can confirm you are a good candidate. Here we will talk about what procedure would be best for you along with an exact quote. The cost is typically between $250-$1800.

is there any downtime?

After the procedure, you may experience swelling and redness, but you can return to work immediately. Avoid tight clothing for at least two weeks if it rubs on the area and refrain from strenuous exercise, sweating, or rubbing the area during this time. Swimming, baths, and prolonged water exposure should be avoided for two weeks, and no showers for the first 24 hours. Following these aftercare guidelines ensures the best healing and results.

Can I Get the Treatment If I Currently Have a Tan?

Absolutely not. We need to match the ink to your natural skin tone only and require that our clients postpone their treatment until their tan has faded. This ensures that we are able to custom-blend an ink color that will look most natural whether you are tanned or not tanned.

Can I Suntan After the Procedure?

Yes! You can suntan once the area is fully healed (around 40 days but everyone is different). It is STRONGLY recommended to avoid sun exposure during the healing process, as discoloration might occur.

For best long-term results, we recommend applying at least 30 SPF on the treated area prior to sun exposure.

What Do I Need to Do to Prepare?

We recommend you exfoliate the area being treated at least 3 days before your appointment to remove excess dead skin cells. Also, please avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24-48 hours before and after treatment. Please moisturize or oil your skin weeks leading up to your session so it is in good condition. Dry, flaky skin will not take the ink well, and the results will not be as good. On the day of the treatment, do not use any lotions or oils on the area, as this can interfere with the ink placement. Make sure you eat before your appointment, as this will help with pain thresholds and feeling well for treatment. Buy a cold compress ready for your aftercare when you get home (you can use a bag of peas from the freezer, too!). You will be given aftercare ointment and information to take home with you.

what to avoid before my camouflage appointment?

  • Aspirin or ibuprofen 24-48 hours prior to your appointment.

  • Alcohol, caffeine, or blood thinners 24-48 hours before your appointment.

  • Fish oil or vitamin E one week prior to your appointment (they are natural blood thinners).

  • NOTE: Allergy testing is recommended before the scheduled appointment if there is any doubt you may be allergic to the pigment. CONTACT US if this is your case!

  • Refrain from using Accutane for 6-12 months.

  • Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Motrin, or Advil for three days prior to treatment. These agents will interfere with the natural inflammatory process that is critical and responsible for your skin rejuvenation.

  • Avoid IPL/laser procedures, unprotected sun exposure, or sunburn for three weeks prior to treatment. We want to prevent sunburn. We cannot work on burned, irritated skin.

  • No shaving on the day of the procedure to avoid skin irritation to the area being treated. If dense hair is present in the treatment area, closely shave the area the day before you arrive at your appointment.

what to avoid after treatment?

You must avoid sunbeds (preferably indefinitely), saunas for a month, no exercise to cause excessive sweating or swimming for two weeks, and when going out in the sun, use an SPF of 30+. You will need to avoid showering on the treated area for 24 hours. The area may scab as it begins to heal - do not scratch it if it itches! You will be given aftercare to avoid scabbing as much as possible. It is SO important to follow the aftercare advice given at your consultation. If you disturb the area while it is healing, not only can you lose some ink, but you may cause further scarring. Only use the aftercare recommended. which is Aquaphor.
